A very rare pair of white glazed dignitary-warrior figures with well defined, expressive faces

Each figure is standing, arms clasped at the waist, wearing helmets and ornate armor.
We have never seen or heard of figures of this type, found in a creamy white glaze.
Actually, they are rare in any glaze.

An excellent pair of Chinese sancai (3 color) glaze lokapalas standing on bulls

The rarest of their features are the ridged pattern on the legs and fish scaled armor pattern.

These superb guardian figures standing triumphantly atop subdued demons are among the most detailed, highest quality glazed sculpture made for the aristocracy of the Tang Dynasty.  The extremely rare features emphasizing the composition and the extensive technical and artistic virtuosity required to create this pair are some of the reasons that the Tang Dynasty is referred to as “the Golden Age” of China.

This superb rendition of a standing Lokapala in an archer pose is one of the rarer of the “Heavenly King” poses.

The strong facial expression and athletic stance of this guardian figure are highlighted by an extensive amount of original gold and pigment decoration.
